If as a club we do not have a total abstention policy, and we sign a player who we know smokes, then what the hell has it to do with anyone if he continues to smoke?

Depends what they're smoking. If it's recreational drugs, I can understand it. If it's just cigarettes, that do nothing other than make you smell bad, breathe worse and die younger - then the same as anyone else, they're moronic!

Not bothered as long as they do the business on the pitch.

If your a professional sports person and a smoker than you either a) have no will power b) have no ambition or c) your a bit of an idiot. Or possibly even all 3.

Well, let's not get carried away. Drinking and being tw@s in nightclubs is certainly not exclusive to Hull FC or even RL. My own football team (Aston Villa) proved that only last week.
A player that chooses to smoke is not looking after his own health responsibly, which I'd hope is the minimum the club expect.

Being an non smoker I don't agree with it .But it didn't do M Crane any harm he was a great player
